I just saw this article which explains how a bunch of San Franciscans got fed up last year during holiday season and decided to make a compact with each other and not buy anything new for a year. They could buy used things and as it turns out they ended up relying on each other more. They borrowed, they bartered and they exchanged services with one another.
Many of them in this original group have decided to continue this lifestyle past the one year they all promised each other. For many, it works well.
Here is a group of Chicago area people who are "compactors", making a compact to not purchase anything new for a year. I just joined them and I hope to learn a lot from them.
