The Obama New Yorker Cover

Well, I got it. I thought it was ridiculous and I laughed, and then paused, because a lot of people won't get it and will see it as support for their ridiculous ideas about Obama's loyalties and interests.

An artist recently depicted Barack and Michell Obama as terrorists and supporting Bin Laden and other completely over-the-top images for the cover of The New Yorker magazine.

I'm not going to show it to you, because the image is just too ironic for lots of people--they won't get it and will only feel supported in their poor judgment of Obama.

Instead, let's look at a photo of the Obama family.

That's better. That shows the loving family that they are. It's always nice to see that. I'll pretend that people know that The New Yorker cover is satire and irony and does not depict Obama's true intentions and motives, rather it illustrates the ludicrous notions floating around the airwaves and blog posts of the right. It's a slam against ignorance. In one image everything outrageous was captured and shown to be so ridiculous...but, many people believe that kind of tripe. So, it ends up not being funny. It's actually desperately, desperately sad.

So, I'm just going to pretend, as I said. *hands over ears* La la la la la la la la la --I can't hear you New Yorker!! Not even Goings on About Town, not any of the witty, topical cartoons. No. None of the sophisticated essays and theater reviews. None of it. You are persona non grata to me now. La la la la la la la...

For me, you just validated your lack of intelligence by admitting that you hear only what you want to hear. If it is what you believe then you will listen, if not then it is wrong and you ridicule those that do not believe as you do and your hands go over your ears and you say La la la la la la. Real smart!

Um, what?

My whole point here,

"So, I'm just going to pretend, as I said. *hands over ears* La la la la la la la la la --I can't hear you New Yorker!! Not even Goings on About Town, not any of the witty, topical cartoons. No. None of the sophisticated essays and theater reviews. None of it. You are persona non grata to me now. La la la la la la la..."

is that I obviously like this magazine and will therefore pretend that they didn't do ironic cover art that I'm afraid will only feed the racists and ignorant. I'm going to pretend that they didn't just do something amazingly stupid.

I'm suggesting that for a liberal magazine who mostly supports Obama, that was a huge gaffe to put that kind of art out there that will easily be misconstrued by Obama haters. What did you think I meant?

Laura, I found the New Yorker cover offensive, flat out. Whether or not the cover was intended to be satire, poke fun at the far right, whatever the intentions, Senator Obama must overcome all kinds of assumptions made about him and perpetuated by nasty rumors on blogs, ignorant media outlets, other campaigns, etc.

If the New Yorker supported Obama (do they?), they might have thought twice about publishing such a damaging image of him and his wife Michelle.

Thank you for putting words to my own feelings regarding this cartoon.
