Bo Diddley Died Today

Bo Diddley died today. He was 79 and one of the founders of Rock and Roll. Can you imagine being one of the seminal forces of a music genre? It boggles my mind.

I read a New York Times article about him and it said that his three beats/rest/two beats rhythm can be found in Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away,” Johnny Otis’s “Willie and the Hand Jive,” the Who’s “Magic Bus,” Bruce Springsteen’s “She’s the One” and U2’s “Desire,” among hundreds of other songs.

Rest in peace Bo Diddley. Thank you for your gift of music to all of us. Thank you for inspiring Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones and The Who and Buddy Holly before that and U2 and Bruce Springsteen later on.

Bo Diddley put the Rock in Rock and Roll.
